Max Baggio admits it feels special to be in the same shoes as Dougie Crawford after he replaced Great Britain's No.1 speed skier as National Super-G champion on Monday.
More than 100 skiers took to the sun-kissed slopes of Tignes for the first event at the Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships, after it had been delayed over the weekend due to poor weather conditions.
And 19-year-old Baggio was undoubtedly one of the stars of the show, taking over the mantle from 2014 winner Crawford to top the British National Super-G podium.
He also enjoyed success in the National Junior Championships Super-G race – despite having to settle for bronze – but it was his first run, setting a blistering time of 1:14.10 minutes, that really turned heads.
“It’s definitely cool, I’m happy with how I skied and the podium and the result came,” said Baggio. “I felt good at the top and then coming onto the little last flat section.
“The last banana was a bit sketchy and I almost lost it, but I was really happy with the top. It’s definitely a cool feeling. Dougie is one of my role models in speed skiing so it’s great to become the champion.
“The second run was a bit scrappier, but I did get third in the Junior Championship so that went well too.”
Following the success of the Great Britain team at Sochi 2014 and with the support of Snowsport England’s national participation campaign GO SKI GO BOARD, it has been a tremendous year for British winter sports. The campaign started in September 2013 and more than 40,000 new people had taken at least one taster or coaching session by the end of last year.
Baggio’s been on skis for as long as he can remember – and he can’t wait to attack the Downhill race, which is next up at the Championships
“The Downhill should be even more fun, it’s longer and will be different but I know the conditions a little better now because it’s the same hill,” added Baggio.
“I’ve not had so much downhill experience this season but done a lot the season before and generally having just been on the speed skis.”
