ATHLETICS: The powerful U15 boys squad dominated the top prizes at Westminster Lodge-based St Albans AC's annual awards night on Friday.

The prestigious Victor Ludorum, for outstanding athlete of the year, was presented to Christian Gaddes, whose 80m hurdle performances have seen him climb to the rating of number two in the country.

That is also the national ranking of James McMurray for the 800m, a performance that saw him awarded the trophy for Outstanding Track Athlete.

His efforts also included new club standards at 800m, 1500m and 3000m.

St Albans supplied almost the entire Hertfordshire county U15 squad.

That also included Jake Awe, who picked up the Award for Outstanding Field Athlete with new club records in the long and triple jump, and Chris Hilton, who was named Sportsman of the Year.

Joel McNeil, who set a new club record for the javelin, received the trophy for Best Male Thrower while Luke Yaxley, who like Gaddes made the final of the 80m hurdles at the English Schools championships, was named Most Improved Athlete.

Other awards in the boys' section went to Sam Jamieson-West (Most Improved Middle Distance runner) while U13 Simon Smith, who equalled the new club high jump record of 1.48m, won the cup for Best Jumps Performance.

The Vitrix Ludorum, presented to the outstanding female athlete, went to U15 Megan Steer, who also competed at the English Schools championships, as well as setting new club bests at 300m and 800m.

Alix Smith was named Sportswoman of The Year, Alicia Tymon-McKewan was Best Sprinter and Laura Farrar Best Middle Distance.

From the U13 girls squad, Lucy Dicks, who also equalled the club best of 1.45m for the high jump, was hailed as Newcomer of The Year while Alice Townend was presented with the trophy for Best Female Throwing Performance.

The Cross County Cup went to Hannah Hull while The Alistair Tully Trophy, presented in memory of the club's much missed coach and awarded for Most Promising Youngster, went to Tabitha Weddell.
