District sports tournament continues fine tradition with another successful running

Over 650 children took part in another successful running of the the St Albans Primary Schools’ District Sports tournament.

The event was first held in 1904 and this year’s edition for children aged seven to 11 took place over two days at Westminster Lodge and featured 31 schools.

It was split between small, middle and large schools and involved athletics races like 4x100m relays, shuttles relays and sprint races for each age group from Year 3 to Year 6.

There was also high jump, long jump and rounders ball throw.

Organiser Duncan Burgoyne said: “The importance of children experiencing sport is obvious.

“There are the health and fitness benefits, working together as a team, experiencing the highs and lows of competition, the pride in representing their school and the camaraderie of the event, not just with team mates but children from other schools.

“The event generally went very well considering the number of schools and children involved.

“There were a few problems with some schools that we will try to rectify for next year.”

The winners were as follows:

Small schools: Aboyne Lodge (girls), St Peter’s (boys), St Peter’s (combined), St Michael’s (runners up), St Michael’s (points), St Michael’s (girls’ relay), Sandridge (boys’ relay), Aboyne Lodge (girls’ shuttle) and St Michael’s (boys’ shuttle).

Middle schools: Oakwood (girls), Skyswood (boys), Oakwood (combined), St Adrian’s (runners up), Oakwood (points), Oakwood (girls’ relay), Skyswood (boys’ relay), Abbey (girls’ shuttle) and St Adrian’s (boys’ shuttle).

Large schools: St Albans High School (girls), Cunningham Hill (boys), Cunningham Hill (combined), Garden Fields (runners up), Cunningham (points), St Albans High School (girls’ relay), Cunningham Hill (boys’ relay), St Albans High School (girls’ shuttle), Fleetville (boys’ shuttle).
