St Albans City boss Ian Allinson was pleased to see his side extend their winning start to the National League South season to six games with success against Concord Rangers.

But Allinson was also a little concerned by the fact his side had to come from behind to claim the points, with David Noble and Charlie Walker cancelling out Steve Cawley’s 48th-minute opener.

He said: “We didn’t really start until we went 1-0 down and then we showed some great character.

“But I felt for the first 50 minutes we were second best all over the park even though we probably had the best opportunity with Charlie Walker’s one where he hit the keeper’s feet.

“I felt they were probably better than us for the first 50 minutes. To get 2-1 up, they put a lot of balls into the box and caused us one or two problems but we had two or three opportunities to put the game to bed which we didn’t.

“If you don’t do that you’re always going to be susceptible to a counter attack or a ball bobbling around the box and Dean (Snedker) had to make a very smart save in the last couple of minutes to keep it at 2-1.”

Concord included former Billericay defender Matt Paine in their side and made life difficult for the hosts in the first half.

But Allinson was encouraged by the way his side reacted quickly to the setback of falling behind, as they drew level just three minutes later and could have gone on to win by a wider margin.

He added: “You have to give them credit. They’re brought in Matt which has obviously given them a bit of a lift, defensively they looked quite sound.

“We went 1-0 down but you see a reaction. We could have thrown the towel in and got beat three or four but we kept going.

“David’s goal has gone under the keeper’s body but the second goal from the corner was a well-worked move which is great from our point of view and then we had three or four really good chances.

“Charlie Walker had a one-on-one, Sean Lucien hit the crossbar, had one just wide, Sam Merson hit the post, so really in the last 15 minutes we could’ve put the game to bed quite quickly.”
