Radlett without vice-captain Tom Jenkins though
CRICKET: RADLETT suffered a major blow before the start of their season with the loss of their vice-captain Tom Jenkins, who suffered a serious back injury in a motocross accident.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Jenkins is making a slow recovery from cracked vertebrae that left him barely able to walk, and he is certain to miss the whole Home Counties Premier League season.
Shane Burger, the captain, returned from South Africa this week after scoring a century on his debut for Lions, the Johannesburg franchise side, and Kabir Toor has stayed with Radlett after turning down a year’s contract extension at Middlesex for a move to Essex.
Another busy season is guaranteed at Cobden Hill with a full programme of Middlesex 2nd XI and MCC Young Amateurs matches, starting with a Middlesex one-dayer on April 26 and championship three-dayer on April 27-29, both against Sussex. Admission is free.
Radlett slipped to lower mid-table last year, despite more than matching runners-up and local rivals Welwyn Garden City with a victory at Cobden Hill and a dominant draw at Digswell. Burger’s side will be looking for more inspiration this summer with the signing of Rob Clements, the North Mymms spin all-rounder.
Radlett start their HCPL season at newly promoted Bishop’s Stortford on May 7, an early opportunity to avenge their defeat in the Herts Cup final last September.
On the same day Radlett’s second team, under a new captain Gwilym Jones, entertain Chorleywood to start their second season in Herts League Division One as the only reserve side at this level. The club will be fielding further sides in Divisions Five, Seven and Ten.
Any prospective players are invited to contact Charlie Randall on 07770 382127 and attend training without obligation. Umpires and helpers are always welcome at this friendly club.
