Alex Jones is still confident he can secure a seat in the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) Formula 4 championship for 2016.

The Radlett-racer, who turns 23 next month, has spent the last three seasons racing in Formula Vee but is hoping to make the step up.

He had a successful test at the end of last year with Chris Dittmann Racing and is looking to put together the right financial package in order to compete.

He said: “It’s always been the case that drivers bring finance to teams. That goes all the way up to F1.

“My management company is talking to number of people and we’re hopeful of getting something put together in time.”

The Formula 4 season would see drivers from around the world compete in 24 rounds, across eight weekends.

Seven of those weekends take place in England, with Snetterton in Norfolk used twice, but the one that stands out for Jones is the trip to Spa Francorchamps in Belgium.

“That would be amazing,” he said. “I really hope that happens.”

Having had one season in karting prior to his time in Formula Vee, Jones’ career started later than others and he thinks that might prevent him securing his target drive.

He admitted: “I’d be lying if I said F1 wasn’t my ultimate goal but because of my age, I know that is unlikely.

“So with not having as much experience, my aim is to get to Le Mans, the most famous race in the world.”

Jones felt his experience in Formula Vee in 2015 could have been better, despite a couple of top-10 finishes.

He said: “I really enjoyed the season and had some good battles but I didn’t get the results I wanted.

“I enjoyed the races at Snetterton and Cadwell Park but the grid was massive, around 40 cars.”

He is confident that results will improve, if he does make the step-up.
