They had gone into the winter season with plenty of promised but St Albans-based cycling race team, Verulam Reallymoving, are living up to the hype so far.

It is the squad's talented youngsters who are doing it so far.

After the first three rounds of the Central Cyclocross League season, Emma Knox has won all three of the U14 girls' races while Samuel Stacey won the first two rounds in the U16 boys' races before coming a narrow second to multiple national-champion Leon Atkins of Ribble-Verge Sport.

The first round in that category had seen VRM lock out the podium, Alarik Knox and Benjamin Cousins following Stacey across the line.

The team’s latest signing, U8 Jake Avis, looks to be following his elder team-mates on the same journey to success.

He too has won all three rounds in the league while George Rice is another rider likely to be on the podium soon too.

In his first year as an U12, he placed fourth in the second round of the series.

It is not just in the Central League though that the enthusiastic youngsters have shone bright.

They followed Saturday's league round at Campbell Park in Milton Keynes with racing in the Eastern Cyclo-cross League in Welwyn Garden City one day later.

Held at Stanborough Park and hosted by Welwyn Wheelers, Emma Knox took her second win of the weekend in the U14 girls, finishing ahead of all but one of the U16 girls in the process, while Stacey won the U16 boys with Alarik Knox third and Cousins in fifth .

The more experienced of the Verulam Reallymoving squad have had their own successes as well.

In round three of the Central League, Alan Gunner took first place in the V40 men while Paul Caton was first in the V60 men and Liz McKie second in the V50 women.

This followed Gunner and Caton having both won their races in the two previous rounds and McKie having been on the top step of the podium in in round two at Silverstone.

Elsewhere Rachel Dunn took third in the V40 women in round one.

Gunner and Caton then replicated their younger team-mates' achievements by racing two days running, with Alan taking the win in the V40s at Stanborough and  Paul coming second in the V60s.

Verulam Cycling Club’s Claire Sharp also found her way onto the podium in the garden city, finishing second in the women V50 race.

All of that made Doug Driscoll, Verulam Reallymoving's team manager, a very happy man.

He said: "I am so proud of what the team is achieving, at all age categories.

"Our objectives have always been to help provide a pathway for our local young talent and so far, they are exceeding all expectations."
