A junior team from Wheathampstead Wanderers brought the curtain down on seven years of memories and silverware by taking in their first overseas tour.

The U18 Pumas came together at the club largely as strangers and varying degrees of ability and experience.

However, they forged a bond and cohesive team spirit and to celebrate their final moments as a squad before college and university come calling, they ventured across the North Sea to play one last match.

Staying in Amsterdam with parent volunteers, club sponsor Chris Knight of Innermedia and their coach for the seven years, Jason Flynn, the club had planned plenty of activities away from the matches.

Some of the highlights was an organized training session with Vitesse Arnhem at their training facilities, a tour of the Johan Cruyff Ajax Stadium, the obligatory boat trip and a visit to the beach.

Flynn was particularly impressed with the visit to Vitesse.

He said: "The coach and support staff at Vitesse really made everyone feel welcome and gave them a tour of the facilities after an intensive and very useful coaching session in the heat of that weekend.

"The coaching was a mix of instruction in English and Dutch which added to the atmosphere, along with the strictness of the staff who are used to pushing the professional team.

"Former players from Vitesse include Martin Odegaard and Mason Mount whose names adorn the gymnasium glass wall, with Mount being considered by the lead coaches as one of their finest players to pass through the club."

The climax of the trip was a game against SV Geinburgia's U18s.

The locals showed off their Dutch flair in the early stages, taking an early lead, but Wheato responded and goals from Josh Crawley and Ben Willink, Liam Roberts creating most of the chances, gave them a 2-1 lead at half-time.

The game was tough but well natured and something both sides will look back on fondly.

And because the hosts were chosen as they were considered to be on an equal footing, it was not a surprise that the match finished 2-2.

Flynn said: "The host club were so hospitable, and the location was great in both facilities and setting.

"We were told that this match had caused a lot of excitement locally, and they were now very keen to get something similar going for their players and come to Hertfordshire as soon as possible.

"With a long journey ahead of them, as they prepare to go on to college, apprenticeships and universities, the lads will be able to look back at those memories of a lifetime with their Wheathampstead team-mates."
