Yet more "scandalous" goals conceded and another example of St Albans City's inconsistency had head coach David Noble tearing his hair out.

Saints lost 3-2 at home to Eastbourne Borough despite twice taking the lead through Shaun Jeffers and Chay Cooper, the visitors' winner coming with six minutes to go.

It concludes a week that saw a shocker at then winless Dulwich Hamlet last week replaced by a swashbuckling show at Havant & Waterlooville.

And Noble was almost lost for words at his team's performance.

"It was just the manner of the goals again," he said. "I don’t know.

"We’ve got to score good goals to win games but I don’t think the opposition do.

"Are any of our plans working at the minute? We are so inconsistent. People can be good for 88 minutes and then make a really bad error.

"It’s costing us goals and costing us games.

"We are really good in spells and there were some really good performances out there.

"Chay Cooper was again outstanding, Zan Banton was outstanding but we have to learn to do it for 90 minutes.

"We have to cut out the mistakes and cut out the bad decisions.

"The goals are scandalous. It’s really frustrating but you have to keep plugging away."

The defeat leaves St Albans out side the National League South play-off places, four points behind Chelmsford City, although the five teams above them also failed to win.

For Noble though, it is all about what they do for the remaining 10 games of the season, not anybody else.

The head coach said: "I always look at my team, I look at my own players and are we doing the right things.

"We have to worry about ourselves. We are the ones who can put a run together and get us in the play-offs.

"You can’t rely on other people or results."

Saints make the trip to Bath City on Saturday, the side one place below them in the standings, before hosting relegation-threatened Cheshunt on Tuesday, March 21.
