Spanish striker pleased with brace at Kingstonian

SPANISH striker Pelayo Gomez was delighted to get off the mark for the club in City’s 2-1 win over Kingstonian on Monday night.

The Brentford forward netted twice with precision finishes to set up a mouth-watering local derby with Luton Town in the next round of the FA Cup and the 17-year-old was delighted to play his part.

“I was looking for those two goals. It’s been quite a while without scoring so it feels good,” Gomez told the Herts Advertiser afterwards.

“They (City) were looking for strikers, they’ve been struggling for goals so I came to do my job and luckily enough I’ve done it.”

Gomez’s first goal at Kingsmeadow was an early contender for goal of the season, bending the ball into the top corner of the net from the opposite corner of the penalty area, a finish the striker was very happy with.

“I always take it inside and have a shot to see what happens and it was a good shot, it went in and I’m all happy,” he explained.

After taking a couple of games to adjust to the pace of Blue Square South football Gomez has begun to impress for City and he admits it takes a couple of games to adapt to the new level.

“It’s a step up which you just have to get used to, but once you get used to it it’s fine,” he added.

“Last year I was in the Ryman Prem so that was a big step it was my first time playing in men’s football. Now with a higher league I just got used to it in the first two games and now luckily I’ve got myself two goals.”

The Spaniard says he has been made very welcome at Clarence Park and is now targeting helping the club revive its fortunes in the league.

“The team did really well (tonight), the lads are excellent and I’m really having a good time,” he said.

“We’ll see what happens on Saturday. We definitely have to win in the league because we’re struggling right now. First will be the league then the FA Cup.”

Gomez says City will head to Blue Square Premier giants Luton Town looking to win and says all the players are delighted to have seen off Kingstonian to set up the clash with the Hatters.

“It’ll be a good game,” said Gomez.

“We definitely have to have the mindset to win.

“We’ve been looking for this win, especially in these tough games you have to win them. I don’t know how long it has been without winning, but everybody’s really happy.”
