Ian Gayle’s loan at St Albans City ends today but joint manager James Gray is not closing the door on keeping the defender.

The 22-year-old joined the Saints from Dagenham and Redbridge on a one-month loan in November, which was extended by another month after he impressed in his debut – a 1-0 win over Basingstoke Town – and now Gray wants to keep him for longer.

When asked if Saturday was Gayle’s last game, Gray said: “Hopefully not. We’re working on it. He’s been superb for us and him and [Darren] Locke have a real understanding and relationship.

“We’ll have to work hard to get him because he doesn’t live locally – he lives two hours away – but we’re speaking to Dagenham and we’ll try to get something done this week. We don’t want to lose him.”

If City are unsuccessful in extending Gayle’s loan, James Kaloczi seems set to retake his place in the squad. The 19-year-old’s two-month spell at Wingate and Finchley ended at the weekend.
