St Albans City boss Ian Allinson was delighted to see his side make it five wins out of five in National League South with a 1-0 success at Poole Town.

Rhys Murrell-Williamson’s goal proved enough to earn Saints the points on the south coast, but Allinson admitted he would have liked to put the game to bed with a wider margin of victory.

“The game seemed to have a bit of pre-season, it was a bit slower and the pitch was very dry and we had trouble moving the ball,” he said.

“The first 15 minutes was a little bit slow but once we started to drive at them and get beyond them, break their midfield and break their lines, we caused some problems.

“It was a great goal from Rhys again and we could have gone in two up. I felt we had enough chances.”

Poole improved after the restart, with Dean Snedker keeping out Steve Devlin’s effort with a superb save.

Charlie Walker, Zane Banton and Kieran Monlouis could have added to the Saints tally at the other end, with substitute Sam Merson inches away from a decisive touch.

Allinson added: “I felt if we’d got that second, we would’ve got a third and a fourth. We opened them up five or six times in the second half and you always leave yourself exposed in terms of a long ball into the box, bobbling around, a ricochet here or there.

“But luckily Dean did not have a lot to do, although he made one great save.”

Murrell-Williamson’s winner was his third goal in three league games, having also netted in the Herts Senior Cup meeting with Hitchin Town.

And Allinson is delighted to see the 24-year-old in such form in the early part of the campaign, since joining the ranks this summer.

“We spoke to Luke Garrard at Boreham Wood about him, and Junior Lewis, and they both gave him a good CV,” he added.

“He has come to the table and scored three very good goals and two have been really important so far.”

With a clear midweek, Saints can rest up and prepare for two tough tests in the space of three days over the Bank Holiday weekend as they welcome Concord Rangers to Clarence Park on Saturday and then visit Braintree on Monday.
