The centenary baton of the Women’s Institute arrived in St Albans to a full Roman reception recently.
Period-dressed members of the WI were accompanied by Mayor Geoff Harrison and Roman centurion Mike Smith in full martial regalia when they greeted the baton’s arrival at the Abbey Theatre, St Albans.
The National Federation of Women’s Institutes is marking its centenary in 2015 with a tour of the specially designed centenary baton of 69 local federations around the country, and kicked off in Anglesey in January. The baton arrived in St Albans in a 100 year-old car accompanied by WI members dressed in costumes from the same period, and left the city on a tandem bicycle heading for Nash Mills.
Caroline Ellis of Bricket Wood WI organised the celebrations in St Albans district “We are grateful to the Mayor for joining us to welcome our centenary baton to St Albans. The WI has achieved an astonishing amount in its first century and we have a great deal to be proud of. We are a community with a very wide range of interests and are delighted to be joining in the countrywide celebrations.”
