A 60-year-old woman has been ordered to pay £545 for fly-tipping in Wheathampstead.

Marie Cojan pleaded guilty in St Albans Magistrates Court on Wednesday, October 4 to failing to properly dispose of mattresses and bed bases from the property she was managing at Park Avenue North, Willesden Green, London.

She was prosecuted by St Albans district council after the authority investigated the waste, which was dumped in Coleman Green Lane around June 27, 2016.

Cojan had passed the waste to a man named Costa and paid him £250 to dispose of it, but did not check where it was going or ask for a receipt or a business card. She was fined £345, ordered to pay costs of £165 and a victim surcharge of £35, making a total sum of £545.

Cllr Daniel Chichester-Miles, portfolio holder for environment, said: “Everyone has a legal responsibility to make sure their waste is disposed of correctly whether you are running a business or are a homeowner.”
