A garden designed as a small arboretum is rooted in success after winning an annual competition.

Peter and Nicola Cave-Schmidt, of Oakridge Avenue, won the best front garden in the parish of Aldenham competition run by Radlett Horticultural Society.

Judging times vary each year in a bid to to find a different type of garden each time and the judges were looking for an interesting, varied and structural garden.

The winning garden is designed as a small aboretum with at least a dozen trees of varying shapes and colours, including larch, acers, cornus, monkey puzzle, magnolia and others.

The house is approached across a bridge over The Brook and an attractive paved area covered with planted pots.

The Best Community Display award went to Aldenham Parish Council for their hanging baskets along Watling Street and for Radlett Gardens.
