Liberal Democrats want St Albans council to ensure the protection of EU citizens living in the district.

District councillors Chris White and Jacqui Taylor have proposed a motion for the full council meeting on Wednesday, July 11 which mandates the council to support and protect all EU citizens who live or work in the district, throughout and after the Brexit process; ensure they can vote and stand in local elections; and help them apply for permanent residence and citizenship.

Cllr White said: “It’s not so much about Brexit, although this is a consequence of Brexit.

“Our services depend on migrants: our bins are collected by EU citizens and they help staff the NHS, so it’s no use for St Albans if they feel the easiest option is to go home.

“Anything the council can do in a low-cost way has got to be beneficial.”
