Protestors against a mooted 4,000-home development have warned about plans to bring chaos to a busy roundabout today (Thursday).

Drivers will be going around The Bell roundabout in London Colney three times to show what they think the roads will be like with the extra traffic resulting if a new garden village is built on the border between the village and Shenley parish.

The demonstration follows a public meeting last Sunday, where the public suggested ideas about how they could highlight the potential impact of Hertsmere Borough Council’s scheme.

Cllr Katherine Gardner said: “I think it was very successful. The public provided the council with plenty of feedback and we were able to answer questions and provide some guidance.

“We are looking forward to causing chaos on Thursday morning to demonstrate just how much chaos it is going to cause were this garden village to go ahead.”

They are also organising a march on the borough council’s offices on Wednesday, February 28.

But their plan has been criticised by the Campaign for Colney group, whose leader says the roundabout protest is a ludicrous idea.

Brett Ellis said: “A Thursday morning rush hour demonstration around a huge roundabout in London Colney will only affect locals.

“You’d need 200 cars tail-to-tail to have a go slow. It has no purpose and will have no effect and is not even in the right borough.

“And they plan to have two coaches, paid for out of our council tax money, go to a Hertsmere meeting where non-Hertsmere residents can’t ask questions and the Local Plan is not even being discussed.”

Hertsmere Borough Council’s portfolio holder for planning Harvey Cohen said: “During the last round of consultation towards the end of last year, we set out the scale of growth needed in Hertsmere and the different ways this growth could be achieved.

“A garden village was one of a number of development approaches we asked people to consider. We received hundreds of comments and responses from across the borough and beyond.

“Once we are in a position to discuss sites with residents both within Hertsmere and in adjoining boroughs, we’ll be arranging suitable sessions to encourage participation and harness further views.”
