Budding snappers are invited to take part in a photo competition as part of Sustainable St Albans Week.

The Living St Albans competition is being held ahead of the event, which runs from Saturday, April 21 to Sunday, April 29.

The competition is open to young photographers in infant, junior, or secondary school and £100 is up for grabs for the winner of each age category.

17-year-old photographer Miranda Wilkins, who is currently studying for her A-levels at St Albans High School, said: “The competition is a great way for young people to look at what’s going on around them and think about the impact we all have on our environment.”

Participants have been encouraged to use one of the 10 themes in their submission: health and happiness, equity and local economy, culture and community, land and nature, sustainable water, local and sustainable food, materials and products, travel and transport, zero waste, and zero carbon.

Gail Jackson of Sustainable St Albans Week 2018 communications team said: “The photo competition is a new initiative to help get young people thinking about the environment, and to encourage participation in the week.”

Entrants have until 5pm on Thursday, March 29 to submit their photograph with a short description of up to 25 words.

In addition to the competition, the Know How Festival has also been announced for the week, a series of workshops designed to teach people the skills to live sustainably and how to make do and mend.

There will be classes on vegetarian cookery and cooking with leftovers, basic bicycle maintenance and cycling safety, basic DIY around the home, how to unblock a sink, how to change a plug, how mend a zip, darn a sock, and hem trousers, and making beauty products.

The Know-How Festival will take place on Sunday, April 29 - the final day of Sustainable St Albans Week.

The week will launch with Our Planet Our Future – Inspiring Action, and organisers are currently looking for speakers.

Anyone interested in holding an event has until Monday, January 15 to register.
