Replacement gas main work may disrupt journeys near St Albans next week (July 31).
Wheathampstead High Street will be closed to cars between the junctions onto Marford Road and Church Street, but will remain open for pedestrians and shoppers.
Drivers will also not be able to travel into Church Street up to the St Helen’s Close junction. A diversion route will take vehicles via Marford Road, Butterfield Road and the B653.
The National Grid are replacing 180m of ageing gas main - it will take about five weeks, and has been deliberately scheduled during the summer holidays to minimise disruption.
Authorising engineer Dilbir Chana Cadent said: “This project must be done to help ensure that local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies.”
Adding: “We’re also inserting the new pipes into the existing old mains wherever possible, which means less digging in the road.”
