Work has begun on replacing ageing gas mains running underneath the St Albans leisure centre.

Over the next six weeks, the old equipment running from the athletic track to the entrance to the park will be replaced with tough new pipes, which ought to last for 80 years.

Unlike previous works at the park, these take place outside the area of the ancient monument, however engineer Dilbir Chana said: “From the inception of this essential project we’ve worked closely with local authorities and organisations as well as Historic England to ensure our work is delivered as sensitively as possible.

“Day-to day-activities at the park including use of the leisure centre and theatre should not be affected by our work.”

Gas supplies will stay on throughout the project and workmen will not need to access any properties.
