LIONS are hoping to get their claws into walkers who would like to raise money for Grove House at the same time.

St Albans Lions Club is once again organising a sponsored walk and aiming to raise thousands of pounds for the St Albans day hospice.

Over the past six years, the annual walk has raised almost £40,000 to help Grove House continue to provide free care and support to local people affected by cancer or a life-threatening illness.

Organiser Willie Martin said: "More than 152 walkers took part in the last event which was held in October. The heavens opened and we found ourselves wading through puddles and mud so this year we've moved the walk to April and we're really hoping for a lovely, sunny day and that many more people will take part.

"The great thing about this walk is that there is something for everyone as people can choose to walk different distances of either 17, 12, six or three miles."

He added: "The routes all end at Nicholas Breakspear School in Colney Heath Lane where we will be serving meals and refreshments. We are particularly grateful to Nicholas Breakspear as they are very kindly allowing us to use their premises free of charge."

Formed in 1966, St Albans Lions Club serves the people of the city by raising money to help support local causes. Since receiving its Charter 42 years ago, the club has raised almost £300,000.

The money has been used to provide equipment for local schools, hospitals, playgroups, hospices and provide grants to many worthy individuals at times of need.

Liz Hizli, community fundraiser at Grove House, is delighted that the Lions are supporting Grove House again. She said: "We are grateful to the St Albans Lions Club and everyone involved in organising this walk.

"It is very important to know that we have regular, ongoing support. The money the Lions raise really helps us to maintain our services and extend our care to the people of St Albans, Harpenden and Dacorum."

Liz is always keen to hear from anyone who wants to arrange an event for Grove House and she can be contacted on 01727 731008.

The walk is taking place on Sunday, April 13, and there are four different start points depending on the distances people want to walk.

There is still time to register which can be done by contacting Willie Martin on 01727 760904 for an information pack or download a registration form from the Grove House website at www.grove-house.org.uk There is a small registration fee of £5.
