Vote for St Albans’ own internationally famous rock band and help them reach the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.

Local musicians Rod Argent, Colin Blunstone, Paul Atkinson, Hugh Grundy, and Chris White were founding members of The Zombies, a band which rose to fame in the late 1950s.

They enjoyed two US chart topping hits, She’s Not There and Time of the Season, and their Odessey and Oracle album was voted in the top 100 of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

There are currently 19 nominees for 2018’s honours list and The Zombies must make the top five to receive the accolade - they currently sit in 7th place. Other hopefuls include Bon Jovi, Judas Priest, Kate Bush, Rage Against the Machine, and Radiohead.

The Zombies were also nominated in 2014 and 2017. The Hall of Fame says the band have “lush melodies, adventurous lyrics, and catchy arrangements”.

It added: “There was no other band whose sound filled space as gorgeously and completely as The Zombies: the jazz-inflected electric piano of Rod Argent, the choirboy vocals of him and his St Albans schoolmates, bassist Chris White and lead singer Colin Blunstone.

“Other schoolmates, Paul Atkinson on guitar and vocals, and drummer Hugh Grundy rounded out the classic original lineup, which endeared itself overnight to the most loyal and dedicated army of fans to which any rock band can lay claim.”

A later member of the band and cousin of Rod, Jim Rodford, enjoyed 20 successful years with The Kinks but also played with two other local bands - Argent and the Rodford Files.

He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Hertfordshire this summer to celebrate a colourful career - he supported The Beatles at Hammersmith Apollo, and backed Dusty Springfield, Gene Pitney, Elkie Brooks and P J Proby.

While playing with The Kinks, Jim was awarded a Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Services to British Music. The Zombies still record and tour internationally - their comeback album, Still Got That Hunger, was released in 2015.

Vote for The Zombies once a day here until December 5.
