A SPEED trap set up on a road leading into a village caught out five motorists flouting the restrictions on Friday.

Two men and three women now face a fixed penalty of £60 and three penalty points on their licences for speeding along Marford Road in Wheathampstead from the Welwyn Garden City direction where the limit changes from 60mph to 30mph.

Pc Andy Yuill operated the new laser speed camera for two hours in the morning and he was joined by Wheathampstead Councillor Judy Shardlow following concerns raised by Marford Road residents.

Judy said: "I have sympathy for people who are running late but people need to think about the consequences of speeding along this road. Residents are very unhappy about the speed cars travel through the village - it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed. I'm really pleased to have Andy and his team's support."

Andy, of the Harpenden Neighbourhood Team, said: "The safety of pedestrians, especially children, is paramount and we will be doing these operations regularly to encourage drivers to slow down.

We have listened to residents concerns and speeding is the issue that always comes up. I suggest drivers allow more time for their journeys if they want to avoid a £60 fine and three points on their driving licences.
