ORGANISERS argued it was the biggest and longest fireworks night in the area, and Harpenden Rugby Club may have lived up to this promise.

With clear skies a remarked contrast from last year's downpours, there was a lively build-up to the big display throughout the afternoon, as club volunteers busied themselves setting up drinks stalls, a barbecue and helping coordinate the funfair.

More than 4,500 people are estimated to have attended the event, at the club's grounds in Redbourn Lane, but excellent organisation and stewardship ensured there were no problems with parking or access, with a disciplined car parking operation and coaches laid on from Rothamsted Park for spectators coming from the centre of town.

With plenty of mulled wine, hot dogs and burgers on offer, there was no excuse for letting the cold in, and visitors looking for that extra adrenalin rush were queuing up to enjoy some of the hair-raising fairground rides brought in especially for the evening.

Covers band Electric Jellyfish got the crowds warmed up with a host of familiar numbers, before the towering bonfire was lit just before 6pm and soon attracted hoards of spectators looking to take the edge off the night's chill.

Mayor of Harpenden Cllr Rosemary Farmer was on hand to officially launch the display, before the audience was treated to approximately half an hour of pyrotechnic magnificence.

Accompanied by appropriate music, including the themes for Indiana Jones and Doctor Who, it was a highly accomplished performance which kept the crowds' attention fixed firmly to the skies, albeit accompanied by the expected gasps of awe.

It proved to be another successful night all round for Harpenden Rugby Football Club, and one which will hopefully boost their coffers and help them continue their excellent work in the community.
