A HORSE had to be put down after being struck by a van on a busy dual-carriageway during the morning rush hour yesterday (Wednesday).

The accident happened on the A414 westbound near Colney Heath just before 8am and caused traffic chaos for those travelling into St Albans from Hatfield.

A black-and-white horse was struck by a white Ford Transit van and despite the efforts of vets to save the animal, it had to be put down at the scene.

One lane of the road was shut until 1pm while the horse was treated and then removed by Herts Highways.

It is not yet known how the horse came to be on the road but a police spokesperson confirmed that it was without an owner. The driver of the van was not hurt in the incident.
