The skies above St Albans dazzled with light on Saturday night as the city’s legendary fireworks display returned to Verulamium Park.

This year’s 25-minute display highlighted the cathedral’s Alban’s Angels fundraising campaign, which aims to raise money for a project to improve visitor and educational facilities, provide a wider range of events and activities for all ages, and tell the story of Britain’s first saint, Alban.

Melvyn Teare, who helped organise the event, said: “The Angels looked down on Verulamium Park in more ways than one on Saturday.

“When the Cathedral bells struck three, the sunshine appeared to burn away the morning rain for the biggest fireworks event in the region. Over 20,000 people gathered in the park to watch an awesome display of Alban Angels, followed by a panoply of rich and varied fireworks. A huge thank you to everyone involved and to all those who came and made the evening such a success.”

Melvyn is now stepping down from his role, and the Cathedral thanked him for giving his time tirelessly over the years, helping to organise the fireworks display which has raised over £700,000 for charities since it began.
