A BUSY city centre road is now reopen after an earlier refuse cart fire.
Firefighters were called to the scene in Verulam Road at around 3.45pm and managed to contain the blaze quickly.
A St Albans firefighter explained that the domestic rubbish in the truck was smouldering on their arrival but that they managed to prevent the vehicle itself from overheating and catching fire. However, the truck wasn’t driveable following the incident as it’s thought the heat damaged the mechanisms which open and shut the back-loading door.
The road was closed between the junctions with Church Crescent and Folly Lane while the fire was put out and recovery took place.
