Pupils at a St Albans school have spent a month collecting food and toiletries to give to a local food bank.
The Verulam pupils adopted the ‘FEED’ project for September, which sees one school sponsoring the St Albans-based food bank charity for a month.
Pupils are encouraged to collect as many items of food and toiletries as possible, and four Year 10 boys decided to pool their pocket money together to go on a ‘buy one get one free’ shopping expedition.
After raising £100, the boys visited Tesco in the city centre and bought 347 items for the food bank after negotiating a 10 per cent discount with the store manager.
Geoff Sutton of Step, who partner with FEED to organise collections in schools, said: “Every year Verulam School excels at collecting items for the FEED project. The example set by the four boys show that young people care deeply about their local community.”
