Verulam sixth-form students were also celebrating their A level results with their average points scores setting a new record for the St Albans school.

Results continue to be well above national standards, particularly for boys, and nearly all students achieved their first-choice university.

Students were able to get places at all the top universities including four at Oxford or Cambridge.

Said headteacher David Kellaway: "All our students deserve a big pat on the back for the commitment they have shown over the last two years. A-levels are still a very stern test for young people and are generally a good preparation for university study, particularly compared to exams in many other countries.
