A COLLEGE in St Albans is set to expand its flock of chickens after receiving a vital cash boost from a water company.

Veolia Water has donated 1,000 to The Chicken Run Farm Shop at Oaklands College from its Community Investment Fund for 2011.

The cash will help the farm shop project, which is run by 16 to 19-year-old students with moderate learning difficulties, fence off an area of land enabling them to increase the number of chickens to 200.

The students maintain the yard, collect and pack the eggs and sell to staff on campus.

Lecturer Zoe Hyde said: “Working in a shop or similar retail environment is a realistic target for a lot of our learners and the more opportunities we can give them to practice these skills, then the better their chance of gaining employment.”
