A colony of ants got up to some unusual football-themed antics recently in celebration of the England team’s next World Cup match this Thursday.

The leafcutter ants at Butterfly World were given specially made 4mm x 5mm flags made of English red and white rose petals to wish their home team well.

Claudine Fontana, marketing assistant at the Chiswell Green wildlife centre, said the flags are made of the ant’s favourite food.

She added: “After their [England’s] recent defeat, here at Butterfly World we felt that they needed a bit of extra support from our leaf cutter ants!”
