A GROUP of Travellers who set up camp on Harpenden Common yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon are expected to leave today, according to Herts Police.

Police were called to the site shortly before 3.30pm yesterday after 13 caravans pitched up on the site.

A spokesperson for Herts Police said: “Police have been working with the landowners - Harpenden Town Council - and a section 61 notice to leave the site was issued this morning.

“They are expected to leave the site today.

“We are aware of the significant community impact this has caused and have been working with local residents to reassure them that they will not be allowed to stay on the site.

“As a police force, our responsibility is to uphold the law, prevent crime, keep the peace and protect life and property.”

Harpenden Mayor, Cllr Michael Weaver, has criticised the police for not moving the group on last night.
