A WEDDING which led to traffic being held up on a busy route in and out of the city earlier this month has been revealed as the marriage of Lady Flora Grimston.

The daughter of the Earl of Verulam and his wife Dione, the Lord Lieutenant of Herts, Lady Flora was married to Peter Letanka at St Michael’s Church in St Albans and taken to and from the service in a horse-drawn carriage.

Flower girls lined the crossing between the family’s Gorhambury Estate and church which resulted in two brief closures of Bluehouse Hill to traffic.

The closures, which came at the same time as Chequer Street in St Albans city centre was shut to enable sewage pipe replacement to be carried out, resulted in criticism that no prior warning had been given and traffic mayhem had resulted.

But the council’s head of community services, Richard Shwe, has admitted there should have been sufficient advanced warning not just on the day itself and would be discussing with officers how to handle such a situation in the future.
