A FIVE-car pile-up and a power cut affecting traffic lights brought chaos to Harpenden town centre this morning (Monday).

The accident happened just after 8.15am on the northbound carriageway of Luton Road, just before the Nicky Line bridge.

A silver Daewoo, a red Nissan, a silver Ford Mondeo, a black Honda and a green Volkswagen were involved but no-one was injured.

The cars blocked one side of the busy road and the police helped to direct traffic around the crash scene but there were long tailbacks in both directions as a result. The road wasn't cleared until 10am.

To make matters worse there was also power cut at about 9am which shut down all of the traffic lights, including the ones near the crash scene and those controlling the pedestrian crossings in the town centre.
