A REPORT that a woman was being driven down a country lane at gunpoint started a helicopter search and armed police response on Sunday afternoon.

But when police located the silver Vauxhall Corsa in School Lane in Bricket Wood it turned out that the suspected weapon was a toy replica and the three people in the car were larking around.

But the joke was on the two men, aged 20 and 18, and the woman, aged 18, all of whom were from Watford, when police issued each of them with a £80 fixed penalty notice for a public order offence of causing distress.

A police spokesperson said that the member of the public who made the call was understandably very distressed.
