The only English 11th Century central Cathedral tower still in its original form opens to the public in St Albans from this weekend.
When tower tours resume at St Albans Cathedral on Saturday visitors will have the chance to see a new area – the roof space above the eye-catching presbytery ceiling.
Canon Kevin Walton said that visitors would also be able to enjoy some of the best views of the city on the special tours, which scale the heights of the Cathedral’s Norman tower and explore hidden roof spaces and passageways concealed above the church’s floor.
A close-up view of the Rose Window unveiled by Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1989, can be seen following a tower climb which leads to the north transept gallery.
The tour includes a visit to the bell-ringing chamber, the belfry, to see the bells, the Victorian carillon, and an area around 100ft above floor level.
It lasts about one hour and costs £8 per person. The minimum age to join is 11.
