HARPENDEN: Prolific writer John Cooper is about to launch his third book in three years.

John, 72, will be signing copies of the book, A Postcard from Harpenden, at WH Smith in the High Street between midday and 2pm on Friday.

It is dedicated to his late brother-in-law Roger Udell, a lifelong resident of Harpenden who passed away last December.

John took early retirement from the Building Research Establishment in Garston in 2002 where he had worked for 10 years. Previously he had been office manager for a firm of chartered quantity surveyors in London.

Several years into retirement with his wife Betty, he wrote his first book entitled A Harpenden Childhood Remembered: Growing Up in the 1940s and 50s, which was published in November 2007.

A second book, Making Ends Meet: A Working Life Remembered, followed in July 2009 and his third book was published last month.

A Postcard from Harpenden takes the reader on a journey through the town using old images. It takes in postcards of the common, the coming of the railway and the post-war years including the celebrations for the Festival of Britain.

A Postcard from Harpenden is published by Bank House Books.
