A POLICE helicopter was seen circling St Albans busy city centre during market day today following a report of a burglary from Carphone Warehouse after midday.

A spokesman for Herts police said: “At 12.50pm, officers reported to the force control room that males were seen running from Carphone Warehouse in St Peter’s Street, St Albans.

“A short time later two men were arrested on suspicion of theft in the Hatfield Road area.”

A member of staff at Carphone Warehouse said the police were alerted following the alleged theft of phones from the store on Wednesday August 8 at about 12.45pm.

Managing director of Kashu, Gels Picciuto, saw two men being arrested outside his restaurant on Hatfield Road.

He explained: “The first we knew was when they were trying to come into the back of the garden. I saw one man being followed by the police, and they were going into the rear garden of Kashu.

“To be honest, I had no idea what was going on. One minute I was concentrating on my work, and then we had bobbies tackling by the restaurant.”

Gels said he assumed the men were trying to access St Peter’s church yard, behind the restaurant. A spokesman for Herts police said: “At 12.50pm, officers reported to the force control room that males were seen running from Carphone Warehouse in St Peter’s Street, St Albans.
