The occasion was a rare visit to the city from the Flying Scotsman, in its distinctive green and black livery, which stopped at the station shortly before 8am en route to York from London Victoria.

The train, which became the first steam locomotive to travel at an authenticated speed of 100 mph in 1934 and was withdrawn from regular service in 1963, had been fully booked for a number of weeks.

Its visit was watched by local enthusiasts who were allowed to view its visit from all the City Station platforms.
