She may look the picture of health now but 18 months ago when she was just six, Lauren Pett was confined to a wheelchair for a fortnight after being knocked off her bike.

Even though she is now fully recovered the Killigrew JMI School pupil who lives in Stanley Avenue, Chiswell Green, wanted to do something to thank the British Red Cross for the loan of the wheelchair.

so she organised an art sale on the driveway of her home selling drawings she had done herself and leafletted neighbours to tell them what she was doing.

Aided by cakes made by her mum Karen and donated by neighbours in Chiswell Green and at St Stephen’s Church, Lauren raised £135 for the Red Cross and has been presented with a certificate marking her donation.

Karen explained that without the wheelchair loan facility, Lauren would not have been able to go back to school that Christmas which was important to her as she was a narrator in the school Christmas play.

She had been able to do the narration from her wheelchair at the side of the stage and all her classmates were supportive and took it in turns to push her.

Karen added: “We are very proud of Lauren because the fundraising was all her idea and completely driven by her.”
