A TAXI driver is to appear in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Simon Gatier, who is appearing before magistrates this week, has been charged in connection to the death of cyclist Neil Smith who worked in maintenance at St Albans City

A TAXI driver is to appear in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Simon Gatier, who is appearing before magistrates this week, has been charged in connection to the death of cyclist Neil Smith who worked in maintenance at St Albans City and QEII Hospitals.

Mr Smith, aged 43, died in hospital in December after being involved in an accident with a car in Welwyn Garden City. He had trained as an electrician at Oaklands College prior to working in the hospitals.

Gatier is appearing at Central Herts Magistrates court in St Albans charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, failing to report an accident and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

He is a licensed cabbie with Welwyn Hatfield Council.
