The Portland Arms has, in the words of its landlady Caz Kaur, “taken a battering” from Storm Doris after the pub sign was torn from the building.

The incident took place at around 4.30pm, as Hertfordshire was besieged by strong winds and rain.

The frontage of the pub has now been secured and a temporary barrier erected around the sign.

Ms Kaur has said food will still be being served tonight.

Doris has already disrupted rail links, with services at both St Albans City and St Albans Abbey being affected.

Services to and from St Pancras continue to be affected whilst the Abbey Flyer service between the city and Watford was cancelled.

The majority of the disruption was due to trees falling on the tracks, a problem which has also affected roads in St Albans.

Travel providers have urged people to book ahead before travelling.

The Fire Service have said they will only attend to fallen trees which threaten life or property.
