Harpenden Road has been closed near to the junction of Townsend Drive because a “very large” tree was about to fall down.
It was reported to the police at 2.22pm and officers took the decision to close the road near the Ancient Briton pub.
Contractors are en route to the scene but have been held up in traffic. They hope to have the issue cleared up by rush hour.
