ABOUT 40 shoppers and staff were evacuated when fire broke out in a Harpenden supermarket at the weekend.

Firefighters were called to Somerfield in Southdown Road at around midday on Sunday to find that the blaze in a food preparation area had already been put out by staff.

But the store was left heavily smoke-logged and the firefighters used ventilation equipment to clear the air. They had completed the operation at around 12.30pm.
