A TRIATHLON club has received a “flurry” of interest from children wanting to try their hand at the sport after thousands watched Alistair and Jonathon Brownlee race to glory in the Olympic Games last week.

Tri One has been holding training camps at Sandridge Primary School, in Woodcock Hill, during the summer holidays to give youngsters professional coaching in running, swimming and cycling.

And the number of children wanting to take part in this week’s camp went up dramatically on the day the Bronwnlee brothers were crowned gold and bronze Olympic medallists in the triathlon.

Club founder Howard Davis, who was lucky enough to watch the siblings’ gruelling race in London, said: “The have put the sport on the map and made people more aware of the triathlon.

“I think it will inspire more children to have a go and we have had a flurry of interest since last week.”

The club, which trains young people of all abilities aged between seven and15, has seen its biggest ever turnout this week and they hope even more aspiring triathletes will take up the sport following the Brownlee’s triumph.

Howard added: “The aim behind the club is to have a go and learn some new skills and hopefully they will enjoy it and came back to more camps.

“It is a great sport for these kids who may not be into team sports. It is the type of things you can do to challenge yourself.

“It really gives them confidence and self-esteem.”

Children who went along to the camp in St Albans on Tuesday and Wednesday were also treated to coaching sessions with former Olympian Sian Brice, who competed in the Sydney Games in 2000. Tri One are hoping to hold another camp at Sandridge Primary School during the October half-term. For more details visit www.tri1.co.uk
