A set of traffic lights in St Albans which was being mysteriously activated every 30 seconds, despite the fact that no one was pressing the button, has been fixed.

The lights on the pedestrian crossing outside the Odyssey cinema on London Road had been going red every thirty seconds or so, causing congestion to build up in both directions.

The Herts Ad contacted contractors Ringway three weeks ago regarding the problem; however, after engineers were sent to the site to investigate the problem, they found no issues with the lights.

It was only when a passer-by noticed the ghostly lights going red for no apparent reason again and took a video, that Ringway re-investigated the crossing.

Kevin Carrol, Ringway’s divisional manager, working on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council, said: “We attended the site yesterday and it appears that there was an intermittent fault with the push button at the crossing. This has now been replaced and the crossing is working as it should be.”
