St Albans city centre is about to enter a time-warp back to the 20th century.

Pedestrians can follow a trail through the eras - Holywell Hill will be transported back to the First World War and the 1920s, St Peter’s Street will be World War Two and 1940s themed, George Street will showcase everything 1950s and 1960s, and Catherine Street will highlight the 1970s and 1980s.

As part of the St Albans Time Turner Festival, historic cars, motorbikes, and scooters will line the streets and businesses, shops, restaurants, banks, and pubs will be decorated with a retro feel.

There will also be reenactors and jive swing performances on St Peter’s Street, and cocktails and ukulele performances on George Street.

Catherine Street, which will be closed to traffic for the first time, will feature live funk, glam, punk, and new wave music.

Performances include The Parsons Knows DJ, Naomi Czuba Dance, World Rhythms Disco Clubbercise, The Glam Gang, 70s/80s vinyl DJ Eddie James, and The Tuesday Club.

Everyone can have a go at completing an answer sheet about the city, and completed forms will have a chance to win a £50 St Albans gift card.

This event has been organised by the Business Improvement District (BID) for the Heritage Open Days 2018, which is coordinated by the St Albans Civic Society.

BID manager Helen Burridge said: “St Albans encapsulates 2,000 years of history and this Sunday the city will bring the last 100 years to life.

“The wonderful businesses of the city centre are bringing a bit of glamour to Holywell Hill, a bit of groovy to George Street and a bit of funk and punk to Catherine Street.

“The city has never been this engaged with the heritage on our doorstep: step inside the shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants to turn back time this Sunday!”

Tourist attractions all over the district are opening their doors to the public for free as part of the Heritage Open Days 2018, which runs until Sunday, September 16.

There are walks, tours, challenges and opportunities to visit ancient sites.
