ST ALBANS: A young man who admitted causing a crash that left his teenage passenger fighting for her life has received a six month driving ban and been fined 150.

Kieran Hughes, 22, was driving his car along The Avenue in Bushey when he lost control of his Vauxhall Corsa after overtaking another car at significant speed on November 29 last year.

Hemel Hempstead Magistrates Court heard last Friday how Hughes had been on the wrong side of the road while overtaking and had attempted to drive over a speed hump when he lost control. His car collided with a large tree and a wall and his 16-year-old front-seat passenger sustained a fractured neck and spine.

The teenager was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital in a critical state.

Hughes, of Temple View, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention. He also received endorsements on his licence for having two punctured rear tyres.
