St Albans South Signal Box has been shortlisted for a historic railway award.
The Grade II listed building near St Albans City station, which is maintained by a charitable trust, was on the shortlist for a Meritorious Award from the Heritage Railway Association.
The group has recently erected a display featuring a modern LED signal box, contrasting with the traditional mechanisms in the 1890s building.
They faced steep competition for the award from the National Railway Museum, with their exhibition of the restored Flying Scotsman.
But ultimately, the chairman of the signal box trust, Tony Furse, was said to be ‘delighted’ with the accolade.
Formerly the property of Midland Railway the box is maintained alongside a garden and signalling displays, based on Ridgmont Road.
