A BUDDING movie maker hailed as the next Stanley Kubrick is planning to continue his burgeoning career after winning best film in the younger category at the British Film Institute (BFI) awards for his film A Spark.

Oscar Simmons has now scooped two gongs for his master film-making skills, including the best student film award at the St Albans Film Festival earlier this year for his short Dog.

The 13 year old, of Shenley, said of the accolades: “It’s a great step in the right direction and an honour. I do generally prefer to be behind the camera.

“I received a cheque for £150 from the St Albans Film Festival, which I will spend on much needed film equipment.”

Film has captivated the Year 9 Beaumont student for as long as he can remember and he started writing and making his own short films around two years ago.

He lists Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi classic ET as his favourite film but added AI Artificial Intelligence was the movie that truly inspired him to pursue film.

“I found the ideas so though-provoking that I knew that this was what I wanted to do.

“When I was 10, I started watching as many famous classic films as I could and started writing reviews on them.”

Oscar added: “I have no clear favourite director, but the likes of Christopher Nolan and Darren Aronofsky would be up there.

“If I had to choose it would be Danny Boyle, for the fact that every time I watch one of his films, it gives me something a little bit different from the interesting Trainspotting to the insane The Beach and the inspirational 127 hours.”
